HERE IS THE SOLUTION:
There are corrupted components affecting the un-installation process of Windows Live programs. What we need to do is to download a tool that will help us in removing the installation files. This is the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. After which, we'll reinstall the updated version.

Here are the steps:

1. Clear the entries in the Windows Installer database by using the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility:

a. Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from this site:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe


b. Start the utility. Click ***** ALL WINDOWS LIVE ENTRIES **** If anything says "Windows Live," click all such entries that the Utility identifies, and then click Remove.

c. Click Exit.



2. Install the Windows Live programs from the Windows Live Installer website. To do this, visit http://download.live.com

I get the exact same thing - "Programs were not installed because the installation was canceled. aborted:0x800040004". when installing MSN - Windows Live Messenger
